Broadcasters, such as Sky (pictured) and UKTV, now make it a mandatory requirement for TV and film production companies in their supply chain to demonstrate they are making progress on reducing their carbon footprint. The BBC does it internally and is expected to extend this to independent production companies soon. But broadcasting still lags behind other industries on sustainability. This week, Broadcast magazine, the TV and radio industry bible, put the spotlight on production and sustainability and highlighted The Planet Mark and Planet Mark-certified company The Hospital Club.

Commenting in Broadcast, Steve Malkin, ceo of Planet First, provider of The Planet Mark, suggested TV production companies should look to the construction industry as a benchmark and case study on how to improve their sustainability.

“The two industries have similar challenges to address,” he is quoted as saying. “They are based on work that can take a long time to develop and then has to be completed within a certain ‘production’ timeframe, often on site/location, where they face similar issues around transport and energy.

“It’s a similar process, but the difference is that there is no planning requirement for a TV production, whereas there is for a building. and that perhaps explains why the TV industry has dragged its feet.”

In November The Hospital Club and Planet First will be hosting a ‘Sustainability Week’ to highlight issues affecting sustainability in the creative industries.
