Almost 40% of businesses that have pledged to carbon reduction-related initiative as part of UK-GBC’s COP21 ‘Climate Pledge’ campaign, are small businesses, the green building trade body has reported.

Planet First was one of more than 60 UK companies that showed their ‘collective commitment’ to put the buildings and construction sector on a “below 2°C path” at the climate change talks (COP21) in Paris last year.

The companies included major corporations such as Land Securities, JLL and Hanson, but 39% were small businesses, with less than 250 employees – and half of those employ less than 50 people.

“We are pleased that such a significant proportion of the pledges can be attributed to this segment of our membership and it is a significant success for us to have galvanised action from our wider membership, reaching beyond the usual suspects,” the UK-GBC said.

Planet First has pledged on the wall to “help Planet Mark-certified organisations reduce their carbon footprint per employee by at least 10% per year.” It’s Act On 7 campaign, launched this month, aims to get business cutting carbon in light of the ambitious UN Climate Agreement reached in Paris in December.

Other commitments published on the UK-GBC Climate Pledge wall include:

• By 2020 Land Securities will purchase 100 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources

  • JLL will reduce building greenhouse gas emissions per employee by 10% by end of 2017 against 2012 baseline

• Planet Mark-certified SCS will deliver pro bono energy efficiency consultancy support to registered charities in the 2016 calendar year.

The individual pledges are part of a wider aim to transform the global building sector by reaching two key goals by 2050 (and advance them by 2030).

They are:

• Net Zero carbon new building

• Energy efficiency and deep refurbishment of existing stock.

On February 25th, Planet First will be hosting an event at which climate experts and business and environment leaders will lift the lid on the Paris Climate Deal and what it means for businesses.
