DP World London Gateway, the world’s first port to be certified by The Planet Mark™, has been named best Green Ports & Terminals of the Year 2016.

DP World London Gateway has won IHS DPC Green Port Award

The accolade was awarded to DP World London Gateway at the inaugural IHS DPC Innovation Awards held on November 10 in London.

DP World London Gateway was judged the best Green Ports and Terminals of the Year because of its pioneering global industry first in delivering a sustainable practice which demonstrates a commitment to carbon emissions reduction.

Earlier this year, DP World London Gateway became the first port in the world to be awarded The Planet Mark™ for its commitment to reducing its carbon emissions year-on-year.

The IHS DPC Innovation Awards are organised by the industry’s leading trade magazine, IHS Dredging & Port Construction, and recognise the companies and individuals who are changing the industry “through new ideas, processes, technology or equipment.”

Sean Reilly, Head of Civil Engineering and Rachael Jones, Environment Manager, collected the award on the night.

Commenting on the award, Steve Malkin, CEO of The Planet Mark™, said: “DP World London Gateway is the first port in the world to be awarded The Planet Mark™, and this award by industry leading trade magazine IHS Dredging & Port Construction demonstrates that the innovative steps DP World Gateway has and continues to take to be a world leading sustainable port are a shining example to the rest of the industry.”

The port has put systems in place to reduce and monitor its carbon emissions, which include high quality data and detailed carbon measurement, automated stacking cranes and other hi-tech initiatives that increase efficiency, LED lighting throughout the port and operations buildings, and zero waste to landfill.

It has a commitment to reduce its carbon emissions by a minimum of 2.5 per cent per TEU in 2016.

DP World London Gateway Port is the UK’s most advanced deep-sea container terminal. The terminal became operational in 2013. So far two deep-sea berths and landside areas of the port development have been certified to The Planet Mark™.

The port is currently undergoing expansion with construction of a third deep-sea berth.
