Grays Office Supplies put pen to paper on committing to The Planet Mark certification

Grays Office Supplies, a contract stationer acting in the office supplies and furniture sector, has been awarded The Planet Mark certification for its commitment to reducing carbon emissions by 5% year-on-year.

Grays Office Supplies are a family run business established in 1983. The supplier started as a small corner shop and has grown year after year ever since to become one of the UK’s best contract stationers. They class themselves as “your total workplace solution“, providing everything from a box of paper to a school bike shelter.

First year certification to The Planet Mark is based on the commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability in its business operations by measuring and reducing its carbon footprint and engaging its stakeholders.

It first calculated the carbon footprint of its Grays operational site for the year ending March 2019 and has set a target to reduce emissions by 5% annually. This year’s footprint includes emissions from purchased electricity, natural gas, waste and printing paper for its head office.

Natural gas accounts for 34.8% of the total carbon emissions, landfill waste accounts for 34.7%, electricity accounts for 25.5%, paper use accounts for 2.6% and recycled waste accounts for 2.5%.

For Grays Office Supplies, sustainability is about balancing economic success, environmental stewardship and social progress to benefit all their stakeholders. Sustainability has become embedded in the company’s corporate strategy and business success.

Grays is committed to continuous improvement in sustainability, setting a target of cutting its carbon footprint by 5%, a total of 1.2 tCO2e. This would be the equivalent of saving approximately 1000km of car travel.

The Planet Mark Certificate recognises Grays Office Supplies’ good practice in sustainability, including:

  • Measuring 24.2 tCO2e from their building, waste, and procurement, the equivalent of 2.7 tCO2e per employee.
  • Storing 260 tCO2 in one acre of protected rainforest
  • Making a commitment to engage employees and suppliers to drive sustainable improvement in the company
  • Investing in the Eden Project to support continuing education on climate change
