GreenZone Cleaning and Support Services Ltd is re-doubling its sustainability efforts in 2017 after slashing its carbon footprint per employee by 22% in its 2016 reporting period.

The big drop in carbon emissions per employee was partly attributable to a 14% reduction in electricity emissions at GreenZone’s Battersea office and an 18% reduction in fleet emissions per employee in 2016 compared to 2015.

This is the fourth year GreenZone has retained The Planet Mark™ Certificate. The Planet Mark™ Certificate was awarded to GreenZone for showing good practice in sustainability, including:

  • measuring its carbon footprint including electricity and fleet
  • reducing its carbon footprint by 21.8% reduction in tonnes of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e)
  • 18% reduction in fleet emissions
  • 14% reduction in electricity emissions
  • investing in the Eden Project to support education on climate change
  • storing 260 tCO2e by protecting one acre of endangered rainforest through the charity Cool Earth
  • committing to engage employees and suppliers to drive improvements.

The company also shows good practice when it comes to waste and paper usage. GreenZone has been Zero Waste To Landfill for over three years and splits waste into food waste and mixed dry recycling through the First Mile business waste recycling service. The company, meanwhile, only uses 100% recycled paper.

The GreenZone team was presented with The Planet Mark™ Certificate this month (see picture) in recognition of its ongoing progress in sustainability. A key action to come out of the meeting was the creation of a ‘green team’ to maintain the momentum in its progress on sustainability.

Steve Trew, MD and founder of GreenZone in 2009, commented: “ We want to raise awareness of sustainability in a highly competitive market place that has been slow to recognise the concerns and drivers of engaged landlords and managing agents. We are developing a scheme with The Planet Mark™ to measure, report and target carbon reductions for the operations of our services on our client’s sites. This will be true sector innovation in partnership with our clients to reduce their carbon footprint. Having significantly reduced ours, we want to help our clients achieve the same.”

Steve Malkin, founder of The Planet Mark™, added: “GreenZone Cleaning is a shining example of what The Planet Mark™ is all about. Not only is the company cutting its carbon footprint, but it’s engaging its employees and clients around the benefits of sustainability and communicating The Planet Mark™ in bids and tenders to differentiate itself from its competitors to win new business. We congratulate GreenZone on its achievement.”

GreenZone was awarded The Planet Mark™ in 2017 based on its relative carbon footprint per employee. The company’s total carbon footprint in fact increased by 1.5% last year. This was mainly due to growth in the business which led to a 48% increase in staff and 5.7% increase in fleet travel.
