Hive Cleaning, a commercial office cleaning company that prides itself on providing an extraordinary level of service and sustainable and ethical values, has achieved certification to The Planet Mark.
Hive Cleaning’s total carbon footprint in year ending December 2019 was 2.2 tCO2e, a decrease of 56.5% from the year ending 2018. The relative carbon footprint was 0.43 tCO2e per employee, a decrease of 73.9% compared to the year ending 2018.
This is Hive Cleaning’s second year of business carbon footprint reporting. It first calculated the carbon footprint of its Head Office operations for the year ending December 2018 and set a target to reduce emissions by 5% annually. This year’s footprint includes emissions from natural gas, purchased electricity, T&D, fleet, waste and printing paper for its London site.
Electricity emissions decreased by 48%, and natural gas emissions decreased by 62%. The purchase of a fully electric van for the fleet in July 2019 is commendable and no emissions have been attributed for this emissions source because the vehicle is always charged at a renewable power electric charging point.
Steve Malkin, Founder and CEO of The Planet Mark, said: “The results of Hive Cleaning’s carbon reduction speak for themselves. The company truly embodies a sustainable approach, thinking about every aspect of its business and how it can perform better for the planet. I’m so pleased to see the momentous progress made in just one year, and I hope Hive can continue to serve as an exemplar of carbon footprint reduction.”
Louis Beaumont, Managing Director at Hive Cleaning, commented: “Since the very beginning the founders of Hive were determined to create a truly sustainable business with environmental stewardship and strong ethical values at its heart. To this end our robust safety, ethics and environmental policies are at the core of everything we do. Sourcing eco-friendly cleaning products instead of harsh chemicals, toilet paper made from bamboo, zero to landfill waste management, using green technologies, buying British, all help us to be truly sustainable and one of the most environmentally friendly cleaning companies in London, certified by The Planet Mark. One of our landmark and most popular initiatives is adopting a beehive with every new contract. Measuring and reducing carbon footprint with The Planet Mark has helped us immensely to think more strategically about our next steps in sustainability, working with our employees, suppliers and clients.”
Certification to The Planet Mark is based on the commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability within its business operations by measuring and reducing its carbon footprint and engaging its stakeholders.
The cleaning industry is primed for real change in sustainability. Through taking close care of its supply chain, becoming knowledgeable about the impacts of chemicals in cleaning supplies and their correct disposal, the industry and its clients can quickly become much more resilient to the impacts of climate change in the future. As businesses more widely become more aware of the environmental impact of their supply chains, the cleaning industry will have to react accordingly to promote sustainable products and practices.
