International law firm Holman Fenwick Willan has set a carbon reduction target of 5% for its London office in its first year of certification to The Planet Mark™.

The commitment was made as the firm announced it was undertaking a major lighting refurbishment set to slash its energy usage at its London office.

“We are committing to a 5% reduction in our carbon emissions for our first year of being Planet Mark-certified and are delighted to be able to announce as part of this commitment we have begun a six-month LED refit of our office in central London,” said Holman Fenwick Willan Corporate Responsibility Manager Kathryn Hull. “The project aims to reduce our annual energy usage by more than 50% and dramatically reduce the associated operating costs .”

The announcement was made to Holman Fenwick Willan staff at an official presentation of The Planet Mark™ Certification.

Steve Malkin, CEO of The Planet Mark™, commented: “It was at the time of Environment Day 2015 that we first began talks with Holman Fenwick Willan about becoming Planet Mark-certified, so it’s fantastic that a year on the firm has taken such an important step to measure and reduce its carbon emissions and that we were able to present The Planet Mark™ Certification to Kathryn and her team in the presence of colleagues.

“This is a perfect example of how a company can combine the power of technology and the passion of people to make serious cuts in carbon emissions.”

The LED refit project will see over 1000 existing 2×40 watt light fittings replaced by 34 watt ‘Skytile’ fittings. The pay-back period will be 12 months.

Kathryn said that as well as tackling emissions from its buildings, Holman Fenwick Willan would also be looking at ways to reduce emissions from business travel over the next year.

“This is a priority for us as business travel represents a large part of the carbon footprint for the firm,” she said. An award-winning international law firm, whose history stretches back to the early 1800s, Holman Fenwick Willan’s London office already operates a number of green initiatives, including the use of FSC-certified paper in its printers, re-use of computer and printing equipment, automatic night-time shut-down and recycling old equipment with local charities. Additionally, its broader corporate responsibility strategy encompasses diversity and inclusion initiatives; a number of projects in conjunction with local schools, and pro bono and community legal work.

Last year, Holman Fenwick Willan’s CR achievements were recognised when it won the Lloyd’s List Global Awards Corporate Social Responsibility Award.
