London December 2014:

Planet First, the sustainability consultancy which provides The Planet Mark sustainability certification to businesses and buildings in partnership with The Eden Project, has announced that it has awarded certification to construction company Keepmoat.

Keepmoat provides sustainable community regeneration, housing, and planned and responsive repairs to the UK housing industry.

Susan Schnadhorst, Group Environmental and Sustainability Manager at Keepmoat said: “Through Keepmoat’s re-certification to The Planet Mark standard, we are using the information collated through measuring our carbon footprint to identify where to best target energy reduction efforts. In the last 12 months, by better understanding our energy usage Keepmoat has been able to save more than £35,000 simply by re-negotiating supply contracts and the maximum capacity of supplies. In 2015 we will publish our first sustainability report, this will be the strongest signal yet that Keepmoat is committed to embedding sustainability into the very heart of what we do and working with The Planet Mark is integral to this process.”

Keepmoat has introduced a trade down policy for company cars which provides a financial incentive for staff to choose more fuel efficient models. Keepmoat is also continuing its commitment to zero waste to landfill from its site waste by 2020. Biodiversity is a top priority at Keepmoat, the aim is to make all projects net positive in biodiversity and to work with ecologists and external stakeholders to identify which measures to implement to ensure a positive legacy.

Steve Malkin, CEO of Planet First, said: “We are increasingly seen as the only accreditation that guarantees engagement with an organisation’s human resources and stakeholders. The sustainability communications battle will only be won by engaging with everybody involved in the supply chain. The property sector understands that transparency is an increasingly vital aspect of competitiveness. We’re hugely encouraged that Keepmoat has endorsed our work by applying for and achieving the Planet Mark certification.”

Keepmoat is a leader in UK housing industry achieving certification with The Planet Mark this year through a reduction in their carbon footprint of 2.5% per million pound turnover for its operations across the UK. Working in house building and refurbishment, Keepmoat specialises in public and social housing, new build homes, community regeneration, responsive maintenance, retirement solutions and sustainability.

The company is the latest to join the roster of more than 70 Planet Mark-certified organisations that have pledged to reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by transparently engaging their supply chains and supporting local and global sustainability projects.

In the 12 months since The Planet Mark launched its partnership with The Eden Project, the cross-sector take-up of the certification has been diverse and growing.
