LONG WAY UP
“We are delighted to award the Long Way Up production by Long Way Productions certification to The Planet Mark. The project is a shining example of the increasing importance of our relationship with technology and nature. It sets a fantastic precedent to the industry that entertainment and environment can work in harmony. At The Planet Mark, we recognise the importance of communication in inspiring people around the world with a vision of what is possible in creating a thriving planet. Through its dissemination via Apple TV+, the Long Way Up programmes will broadcast a significant message about the communities affected by climate change, deforestation and biodiversity loss.”
– Steve Malkin, CEO at The Planet Mark
The production of Long Way Up has been awarded The Planet Mark certification by measuring and reducing the carbon emissions associated with the 13,000 mile journey made by Ewan McGregor, Charley Boorman and their team.
The certification, from its planning to completion in Los Angeles, recognises the level of commitment and engagement from the team and the significant wider benefits provided by the Long Way Up Productions in the promotion of sustainability, creating a better way of living. The team have measured their carbon footprint of the production of the journey, which took place from September to December 2019, including the UK production offices through to the journey launch in Ushuaia, Argentina to the event finale in Los Angeles, USA.
Ewan and Charley rode Harley Davidson LiveWire electric motorcycles and the support crew drove Rivian R1T electric trucks. Watch Long Way Up and their journey exclusively on Apple TV+.
No Distance Is too Far
To avoid air travel in the planning stages, the production team used video calling, mitigating the need for around 20 international flights, giving a carbon saving of 26.3 tCO2e.
We recognise by far the biggest positive impact may come through the Apple TV+ show itself reaching many millions of people to tell the stories of the communities most effected by climate change, deforestation and biodiversity loss.

REDUCTION IN CARBON EMISSIONS BY SWITCHING TO RIVIAN ELECTRIC SUPPORT VEHICLES
Reduction in carbon emissions by using video conferencing applications to reduce international air travel
The Long Way production total carbon footprint was 212.4 tCO2e and the relative carbon footprint was 0.2 tCO2e per ‘000 km travelled. The Long Way production achieved a total carbon reduction of 38.0 tCO2e, a decrease of 15% through the use of electric motorcycles and support vehicles and avoiding flights by using videoconferencing.
Mitigating unavoidable carbon
Long Way Productions has chosen to mitigate the impact of the production’s carbon emission by protecting 81 acres of rainforest with Cool Earth in the Ashaninka community, as visited by Ewan and Charley on their Long Way Up production journey. This represents 100x more than their actual carbon footprint. Watch Long Way Up visit the Ashaninka community exclusively on Apple TV+.
