The Planet Mark™ has confirmed two of its main speakers at an event it is holding , in association with the Legal Sustainability Alliance, next year that will put the spotlight on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the opportunity they present for business.

Mary Creagh MP (pictured right), chair, Environmental Audit Committee (EAC), is to make the keynote speech at the event held at Linklaters in London on February 1 2018 and organised by The Planet Mark™ sustainability certification programme.

Louise Scott, Global Sustainability COO, PwC UK, and lead on the firm’s work in relation to the SDGs, has also been confirmed as a speaker.

The UN SDGs, aka ‘Global Goals’, were launched in 2015 and have been described as the “greatest economic opportunity of a lifetime” by CEO of Unilever, Paul Polman. The UK Government is a signatory of the Global Goals and it is estimated the SDGs could create a $12 trillion economic opportunity by 2030.

Mary Creagh MP and the EAC have been closely scrutinising Government action on the Goals since the UK became a signatory to the SDGs. The EAC launched an inquiry into the SDGs in 2016 and published a report on its findings in April of this year.

In her keynote speech, Mary will update the audience on latest policy developments in regards to the SDGs and the role of business in moving action on them forward.

Louise Scott has been instrumental in developing PwC’s SDG Selector, a free practical tool for businesses to assess which SDGs are relevant to them.

Louise (pictured right) has said about the SDGs: “Trillions of dollars of public and private funds will need to be directed towards achieving the SDGs. There are huge opportunities for businesses to help deliver solutions, as well as big risks for companies seen to be hindering progress on the goals.

“The UK government (and all governments for that matter) is on a journey to deliver the SDGs and clear direction is needed. The challenge is deciding where to start, not only for the UK government, but for business too.”

The Planet Mark™ event aims to provide information and practical advice and support for businesses looking to engage with the SDGs. Alongside hearing from high-level speakers, those attending will:

  • Receive practical advice on achieving the SDGs
  • Engage in the debate through a Q&A and interactive tool
  • Find out how The Planet Mark™ can help them meet the SDGs
  • Come away with practical resources on how to take action.

The event is kindly being hosted by Linklaters and supported by associate sponsors the LSA, HFW, Bidfood, Harrow Green, DP World and CNG.
