Two Planet Mark-certified companies have been named runners up in the Mayor of London’s 2015 Business Energy Challenge Awards

Casual Films, the online video production company and corporate film specialist, and Harmsen Tilney Shane, a leading commercial design consultant, were both recognised for their commitment to reducing their energy usage and their carbon footprint at the Mayor’s Business Energy Challenge Awards, held earlier this month. They were recognised alongside big names in the capital, including Arsenal Football Club, ExCel London and Sainsbury’s supermarket.

Casual Films and Harmsen Tilney Shane were both named runners up in the small business category of the Mayor’s Business Energy Challenge Awards. Through their Planet Mark certification, Harmsen Tilney Shane last year slashed its carbon footprint by 17%, while Casual Films managed to reduce its overall carbon footprint by 11% in its last reporting period. They were pipped to the post by Arcola Theatre, the arts venue and dramatic company in Hackney in the small and micro-business category – a newly launched section in the Business Energy Challenge Awards. Arcola aims to be the world’s first carbon-neutral theatre.

Praising the achievement of all three businesses, Steve Malkin, CEO of The Planet Mark, said: “We are delighted to see Casual Films and Harmsen Tilney Shane come so far in such prestigious awards and against such tough competition. Arcola is a recognised leader in sustainability and Casual Films and Harmsen Tilney Shane have shown that being small is no barrier to being green and that communicating your achievements will win you recognition. We hope other Planet Mark-certified SMEs will follow their lead.”

According to City Hall, the 110 London businesses who entered this year’s Business Energy Challenge delivered a collective 188,000 tonnes in carbon dioxide emission reductions, by reducing their energy usage by an amount that would be enough to power over 24,000 homes.

Announcing the winners at a ceremony at City Hall on November 16, the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said: “London’s businesses continue to prove that economic prosperity and green business practices can go hand in hand, making our city a leading example for others to follow.”

The Business Energy Challenge was conceived with the global cities organisation C40 as a way of encouraging the city’s corporate sector to step up to the challenge and do their part in achieving the Mayor’s overall targets for emissions reduction of 60 per cent by 2025.

Businesses submit energy usage data and are assessed on the carbon intensity per square metre of their properties, so both medium and large businesses are put on an equal footing. Gold, silver and bronze awards are distributed to the businesses most successful in reducing their carbon intensity.

This year’s gold award winners were Accenture, Addleshaw Goddard, Arsenal, Capgemini UK, Capital & Regional, ExCeL London, RSA Insurance Group, Savills UK, UK Power Networks, and Wincanton Records Management.
