MediaCom recognised for sustainability commitment with The Planet Mar certification

MediaCom North, part of the world’s largest media networks, has been awarded The Planet Mark sustainability certification by committing to reduce their carbon footprint year-on-year.

The Planet Mark certificate was presented to Mediacom by Steve Malkin, founder of The Planet Mark at their Manchester office as part of the agency’s sustainability programme. “We are delighted to be certifying MediaCom for the first time,” Steve commented. “The company’s commitment to reducing its carbon emissions in its operations and minimising its environmental impacts is to be applauded. Mediacom recognise that it is essential for the creative and marketing industries to show leadership in sustainability, helping brands to communicate more responsibly and give greater peace of mind to their customers.”

Mediacom’s sustainability agenda was catalysed by an employee engagement initiative and quickly evolved into an all-encompassing environmental strategy, embedded in their operations and procurement processes. “We take CSR extremely seriously at MediaCom,” commented Business Intellignce Board Director, Ffion Turner. “We don’t want it to be a box ticking exercise, we want it to be engrained in our culture and we have taken important steps over the last couple of years to do this. We are now really seeing a difference.”

This is Mediacom’s’ first year of business carbon footprint reporting with The Planet Mark. This has included MediaCom measuring the carbon emissions of its operations for the year ending December 2017 and setting a target to reduce emissions by 5% annually.

Upon receiving The Planet Mark certificate, Fiona Hunt, Board Director commented: “Here at MediaCom, we are incredibly proud of the work we have done to reduce our carbon footprint with the help of The Planet Mark. We have always had a people first philosophy and pride ourselves on ensuring our colleagues come to work in a positive and happy environment. This goes one step further and helps us to protect our futures.”

Mediacom North has achieved certification to The Planet Mark by showing good practice in sustainability including:

  • Measuring carbon emissions from electricity, waste, water, fleet, travel and paper
  • Storing 260 tonnes of CO2 by protecting one acre of endangered rainforest through the charity Cool Earth
  • Committing to engage employees and suppliers to drive improvement
  • Investing in the Eden Project to support education on climate change
  • Training 49 staff as mental health allies to support staff and help remove stigma surrounding mental health
  • Offering wellbeing activities and a monthly well-being allowance available for all staff
  • Saving 4,400 coffee cups used each month by replacing with Keep Cups.

Specific measures Mediacom North is taking to hit its 2018 targets include:

  • Conduct an energy audit to help identify where most energy is being used and potential wastage from equipment, lights and heat loss
  • Train all staff on environmental awareness by Autumn 2018
  • Invite stakeholders, clients and suppliers to host/co-host green campaigns
  • Run awareness campaigns on climate change, deforestation. air pollution and plastic.

The Planet Mark

The Planet Mark is an internationally recognised and trusted sustainability certification programme, recognising commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability. It is awarded to businesses, properties, new developments and projects that are committed to reducing their carbon emissions. Partnered with the Eden Project, The Planet Mark contributes 5% of all certification fees to the award-winning visitor attraction. Each certification also comes with 12 free tickets to Eden Project, encouraging organisations to learn more about climate change and the importance of biodiversity.

The first year of certification to The Planet Mark is based on the commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability in its business operations by measuring and reducing its carbon footprint and engaging its stakeholders. In subsequent years, holders of The Planet Mark have a minimum requirement to reduce their carbon emissions by 2.5% per year. The average absolute carbon reduction achieved by holders is 4% per annum and 12% per employee per annum.
