BeaconHouse Events, a company that plans and delivers professional conferences, exhibitions, membership, awards, celebrations, outdoor events and festivals across the UK, has achieved certification to The Planet Mark. Beacon House Events’ total carbon footprint in the year ending December 2019 was 1 8 tCO2e. The relative carbon footprint was 0.3 tCO2e per employee, and 4.03 tCO2e per £m turnover.

This is BeaconHouse Events’ first year of business carbon footprint reporting and certification to The Planet Mark. It first calculated the carbon footprint of its Newcastle head office operations for the year ending December 2019 and set a target to reduce emissions by 5% annually.

This year’s footprint includes emissions from purchased electricity, transmission and distribution losses and business travel. Rail travel accounts for 45% of the total carbon emissions, while vehicles used for business travel and electricity account for 27% and 19% respectively.

Our increased focus on reducing our carbon footprint and adopting sustainable working practices has been hugely beneficial to our clients and delegates, and with the rise in virtual, online only events, we’re confident we’ll be reducing our emissions in excess of the 5% this coming year.”

Certification to The Planet Mark is based on the commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability within its business operations by measuring and reducing its carbon footprint and engaging its stakeholders.

BeaconHouse Events know urgent action is needed to tackle climate change, and as an organisation working within a historically wasteful environment, it is committed to helping change for the better. The company has made a number of changes to the way it produces events, making changes to its supply chain to reduce the use of single use plastics, working with venues to provide vegan and vegetarian catering, championing local, eco-friendly suppliers, and even promoting walking tours between venues in lieu of more carbon intensive transport.

Increasing awareness of climate change and new approaches to events management combine to make sustainability a top priority for the events industry. Events are designed to demonstrate the best of an organisation or industry, and as such an increasing number of customers are taking closer inspection of the carbon emissions of hosting events. The industry must respond through analysing its own impact and that of its supply chain, for both its sustainability and profitability.
