Cool Earth | The Planet Mark

Cool Earth

Cool Earth, a UK based international NGO that protects endangered rainforest in order to combat global warming, protect ecosystems and to provide employment for local people, has achieved certification to the Planet Mark.

As well as being certified with us, we also work in partnership with Cool Earth to protect an acre of rainforest for every new Business Certificate we deliver.

This is Cool Earth’s ninth year of business carbon footprint reporting. They first calculated the carbon footprint of their Cornwall head office operations for the year ending January 2013 and set a target to reduce emissions by 5% annually.

Cool Earth’s total carbon footprint for the year ending January 2020 was 41.4 tCO2e, a decrease of 25.6% from the year ending 2019. The relative carbon footprint was 2.0 tCO2e per employee, a decrease of 31.3% compared to the year ending 2019.

The carbon saved by Cool Earth this year is the same as the carbon captured by 18 acres of forest in one year.

Steve Malkin, Founder and CEO of The Planet Mark, commented:Cool Earth has partnered with The Planet Mark for nine years, and yet the charity is still able to impress me so much. This year’s results are a huge success. Cutting carbon by over one quarter in one year sends out a clear message – rapid sustainable change is possible. It takes dedication, hard work and expertise, all of which is in plentiful supply at Cool Earth. I’m so proud of the team’s achievements this year.”

Matthew Owen, Director of Cool Earth, commented:One of the most effective actions we can take to tackle climate breakdown is to support local communities to keep their carbon-rich rainforest standing strong. Cool Earth’s mission is just that, but we know we can always do more. That’s why Cool Earth is proud to be working alongside The Planet Mark and their certification team to help us continually assess the sustainability of our UK operations and their impact on the environment, ensuring that local decisions lead to a positive global difference.”

Cool Earth’s vision is a world where tropical deforestation and degradation has no role in climate change. The charity believes that supporting local people to protect it is the smartest, most positive climate action there is. The work it does helps indigenous communities local to the rainforest to halt deforestation and protect these habitats that are vital to combatting climate change.

Organisations working in sustainability must learn to practice what they preach. Working towards sustainable solutions must be combined with climate friendly policies embedded into day-to-day operations. In addition to aligning the sustainability goals across the organisation, reducing one’s own carbon footprint is a way to reaffirm an organisation’s brand and purpose.
