This is Sleepeezee’s second year of certification to The Planet Mark. They calculated the carbon footprint of their UK operations for the year ending December 2018 and set a target to reduce emissions by 5% annually. Sleepeezee was the first UK mattress manufacturer to receive The Planet Mark.
Sleepeezee’s total location-based carbon footprint for the year ending December 2019 was 475.2 tCO2e, an increase of 7.2% from the previous year. The location-based carbon footprint per £m turnover was 13.3 tCO2e, a decrease of 12.6% from the previous year. Sleepeezee has also offset their total market-based organisational emissions footprint (438 tonnes CO2e) split between several projects, including UK tree planting, protecting the Brazilian Amazon, and funding wind power in India.
Businesses must learn to embrace sustainability. Rather diverting from the success of a business, a robust sustainability strategy is crucial for ongoing success. A business that doesn’t factor in sustainability takes risks in several ways, including profitability, growth, and employee retention.
Steve Malkin, Founder and CEO of The Planet Mark, commented: “Sleepeezee has made positive steps in the efficiency of its operations, and for that I applaud them. As the first in its industry to be Planet Mark certified, the company has already solidified its pioneer status, and the measures it has taken to offset its total carbon footprint are further evidence of the company’s progressive attitude. Sleepeezee’s clients will rest soundly in the knowledge that the products they buy will be from a responsible company dedicated to positive change.”
Howard Wilson, Joint Managing Director at Sleepeezee, commented: “Our business is dependent on natural resources to make beds that deliver an excellent night’s sleep. We have a simple and clear belief that one of our fundamental duties is to ensure our activities do not have a detrimental impact on the planet.
Introduced by the Royal Warrant Holders Association and with our existing commitments to sustainability and the environment already in place, Planet First was a natural fit for our organisation. Since our first meeting, Sleepeezee has reduced the number of carbon emissions every year for each unit produced in our factory, becoming a carbon-neutral organisation in 2017 and achieving PAS 2060 in 2019. The Planet Mark has undoubtedly helped us achieve these milestones by encouraging us to continually focus on new objectives and communicate to our stakeholders while enabling the business to grow without compromising our ultimate responsibility – to safeguard the planet for future generations. Sleepeezee is proud to be the first bed manufacturer to achieve the Planet Mark.”
Sleepeezee understands that their customers match their awareness for environmental issues. As well as becoming the first UK mattress manufacturer to achieve certification to The Planet Mark, they are recognised by the Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme for their work in sustainability. Sleepeezee supports initiatives to limit its reliance on fossil fuels, clean its supply chain and offset its operational emissions. The company has also switched to 100% renewable electricity in October 2019.
As consumers increasingly demand environmentally friendly produce, B2C businesses must embrace sustainability to thrive in the modern world. From measuring and reducing their own impact on the environment to engaging its supply chain and stakeholder network, a modern business can’t rely solely on quality products; it must also ensure those products haven’t caused undue harm to the planet. Targeted and scientific sustainability policies are the only way to accurately respond to the demands of the modern consumer.
