Small Stuff

Small Stuff UKdesignled, ethical and eco-friendly children’s store selling high quality gifts, clothing and books for young children, has achieved certification to The Planet Mark.

This is Small Stuff’s first year of business carbon footprint reporting and certification to The Planet Mark. They first calculated the carbon footprint of their Sheffield store for the year ending March 2020 and set a target to reduce emissions by 5% annually.

Small Stuff’s total carbon footprint in the year ending March 2020 was 0.8 tCO2e and the relative carbon footprint was 16.6 tCO2e per million pound of turnover.

Steve Malkin, Founder and CEO of The Planet Mark, commented:Everyone has their part to play in becoming sustainable but Small Stuff UK goes furtherhaving an eco-friendly ethos at its very core. I’m delighted that Small Stuff has decided to commit to cutting its carbon, as it is a cornerstone of a robust sustainability strategy. Small Stuff has always strived to provide products with minimal impact on our planet, and I have no doubt that the company will continue to work on its environmental credentials.”

Small Stuff is an award-winning eco-conscious children’s lifestyle brand, and it goes to great lengths to ensure sustainability is embedded in its products and supply chain by handpicking all the products and working closely with suppliers from around the worldSmall Stuff guarantees everyone is paid fairly and that each product is made with love, is sustainable, and is produced with less planet polluting processes. Small Stuff’s new location is run on 100% renewable energy and as of Earth Day 2020 it has signed up to Offset Earth, through which they will be planting at least 12 trees each month, plus another tree for each £20 spent at the store.

Consumer goods suppliers must heed the call for sustainable production. The modern consumer is becoming increasingly concerned with the source of the products they buy. The average spend on ethical purchases per household has grown from a paltry £202 a year in 1999 to £1,278 in 2018. From original materials through to production and packaging, manufacturers and suppliers have a real opportunity to reap the branding benefits of a low-impact product. While conscious and ethical consumption is a burgeoning market that is only set to grow further, suppliers in the space must recognise the need for a sustainability policy that stands up to scrutiny.
