Petroc reduced its carbon emissions across its three campuses by more than 14.4% compared to the previous year – earning it’s second year of The Planet Mark certification for continuous improvement in sustainability.

Petroc, one of Devon’s leading colleges provides a range of courses including apprenticeships, higher education, part time and adult evening classes.

Estate Manager Jason Quinn said: “I’m very pleased with the result. We are continually improving our processes to ensure we are as sustainable as possible. This year we have improved our recycling procedures and have far tighter controls, we are also continuing to roll out LEDs throughout the organisation. Thanks to their energy-saving systems, our two new buildings – the Engineering Centre and the Lifestyle and Tourism Centre – are cost neutral, which is incredible.”

The college has also recently introduced two electric cars to its fleet and an electric vehicle charging point at the Mid Devon Campus.

The Planet Mark recognises Petroc’s good practice in sustainability, principally:

  • Measuring carbon emissions from electricity, natural gas, water, waste, travel and paper
  • Achieving a 14.4% reduction in total carbon footprint
  • Achieving a 14.4 % reduction in tCO2e per person
  • Committing to engage employees and suppliers to drive improvement
  • Storing 260 tCO2e by protecting one acre of endangered rainforest through the charity Cool Earth
  • Specific measures Petroc is taking to achieve its 2018 targets include:
  • Energy audits to identify potential wastage from equipment, lights and heat loss.
  • Set a policy to make its fleet and
  • Committing to using recycled paper for all office uses
  • Implementing a waste segregation programme and aim for zero landfill waste.

Steve Malkin, founder of The Planet Mark commented “Petroc is achieving more than just a carbon reduction, it’s helping the next generation to understand that being sustainable is easy”.
