Sustainability champions celebrated at The Planet Mark™’s 3 Year Anniversary event

Sustainability champions and enlightened leaders were amongst those being celebrated at The Planet Mark™’s 3 Year Anniversary event, hosted at The Hospital Club, on November 1.

Sir Tim Smit KBE, Executive Vice Chairman and Co-founder of the Eden Project, the founding partner of The Planet Mark™ was keynote speaker at You, Business and The Bigger Picture: the power of the individual to drive sustainability.

The event attracted a packed audience to hear from Sir Tim (pictured), and other guests speakers including Matthew Owen, director of Cool Earth, the award-winning charity that is partnered with The Planet Mark™, and Shirley Duncalf, head of Sustainability, People & Sustainability, Bidvest Foodservice, the leading foodservice wholesaler and distributor that is certified by The Planet Mark™.

The audience heard inspiring stories about the power of the individual to drive sustainability – from the rainforest’s “most potent political champions” – the indigenous communities that depend on it – whom Cool Earth’s work supports, to the sustainability champions at Bidvest Foodservice who are helping to transform the lives of communities in Malawi.

Individual leadership was very much the message from James Read, founder of Planet Mark-certified digital agency Giant Peach, who spoke courageously about how the purpose of his business “for good” has been shaped by a devastating illness that suddenly befell his son.

And Sir Tim Smit pulled no punches as he challenged people to leave their “comfort zones” and seek deeper personal and professional enlightenment. Referencing environmentalists, including James Lovelock and George Marshall, Sir Tim said the world had entered an exciting period and concluded, hopefully, “the genius of human beings is that they can transform themselves.”

The evening was an opportunity to celebrate three years of The Planet Mark™ and founder Steve Malkin (pictured) took to the stage to unveil the impact The Planet Mark™ has had to date.

“This is a special day for us,” he said, as he announced to those assembled that The Planet Mark™ is extending its partnership with Cool Earth to protect an Acre of Rainforest for every new organisation it certifies. “Three years ago we launched at The Hospital Club and to celebrate this, today we’re announcing that for every business we work with we are going to protect an acre of rainforest as part of our certification programme.”

Steve also spoke of forging a deeper partnership with the Eden Project through its Hothouse Programme and about new partnerships to expand the reach of The Planet Mark™, including with the environmental consultancy Low Carbon Europe.

You, Business and The Bigger Picture: the power of the individual to drive sustainability was part of The Bigger Picture, The Hospital Club’s annual week that brings creative entrepreneurs, freethinkers and business leaders together under one roof. Through innovation, creativity and collaboration, these events aim to generate engagement with key social, economic, and environmental issues and inspire creative thinking for building a more sustainable future.
