Utilities management consultancy The Monarch Partnership has been awarded The Planet Mark™ Certificate in recognition of its commitment to year-on-year progress in sustainability.

The award comes as The Monarch Partnership joins The Planet Mark™ Associates Programme in order bolster its sustainability support for its existing roster of clients.

The Monarch Partnership specialises in helping organisations save money on their utility costs. The company has over 30 years of experience of delivering energy, water and waste solutions and saving clients money off their bottom line through intelligent procurement and management services. One if its biggest client sectors is the housing association market.

“Our ambition is to be the most sustainable and efficient utilities management consultancy in the industry,” said David Carlyon, Sustainability manager at The Monarch Partnership, as he and his team were presented with The Planet Mark™ Certificate at their headquarters in Wallington, Surrey, earlier this month (see picture).

This is the first year The Monarch Partnership has achieved The Planet Mark™. It represents the first time the company has measured the carbon footprint of its operations and set a target to reduce its emissions by 5% annually.

Analysis of The Monarch Partnership’s environmental impacts show the relative carbon footprint in the year ending October 2017 was 0.94 tCO2e per employee and the total carbon footprint was 51.8 tCO2e. In its first year’s footprint, emissions from energy use in its Wallington office (natural gas and purchased electricity) were measured, as was fuel used by the fleet, water usage and the production of paper used in the office. Electricity emissions accounted for 49% of total emissions followed by natural gas, which accounted for 26%.

Achieving The Planet Mark™ Certification means The Monarch Partnership has shown good practice in sustainability including:

  • measuring its carbon emissions
  • setting a 5% carbon reduction target for its 2017-18 reporting period
  • investing in the Eden Project to support education on climate change
  • storing 260 tCO2e by protecting one acre of endangered rainforest through the charity Cool Earth.

Commenting on the achievement, Steve Malkin, founder of The Planet Mark™, said: “The Monarch Partnership has been a model holder of The Planet Mark™ in its first year of carbon footprinting. This commitment to sustainability will stand it in good stead as the company look to meet its targets in year two.

“Meanwhile, we are delighted to welcome Monarch to our Associate programme so it can help us deliver The Planet Mark™ Certification Programme and support our mission to empower organisations and their people to make year-on-year progress on sustainability.”

Arjan Dosanjh, Commercial director at The Monarch Partnership, said the consultancy would start delivering The Planet Mark™ to housing associations from March as it kicks off it’s month of sustainability campaigns and new services.

The Planet Mark™ Associates Programme is a network of organisations working across the UK and internationally and are authorised to deliver The Planet Mark™ Certification Programme to new and existing clients.
